Lake Nipmuc to be chemically treated for nuisance aquatic vegetation

By Martin Luttrell

Lake Nipmuc will be chemically treated tomorrow (June 11) for control of nuisance aquatic vegetation and algae, which will restrict use of the lake.

Do not use the lake for the following purposes until the dates specified as follows:

  • Swimming, boating and fishing, June 12
  • Livestock/domestic animal consumption, June 12
  • Drinking and cooking, June 14
  • Irrigation to turf/landscape ornamentals, June 14

The treatment will not affect opening of the Town Beach, slated for June 22.

Again this year, Water & Wetland of Grafton will apply the herbicide Diquat to control variable milfoil, pondweed and algae. The company also monitors basic water quality data, including visibility, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen is necessary to support fish spawning and growth.

Water & Wetland uses a small, private boat launch at the intersection of Uxbridge Road and Old Taft Avenue to access the 85-acre lake.

The town typically spends about $5,000 yearly for control of aquatic vegetation.
