With energy prices rising nationwide, customers of Mendon’s Community Choice Power Supply Program will see an electricity rate hike in September from roughly 14 cents per kilowatt-hour to around 16 cents, with the rate change showing up on October’s bill.

The new rate is locked in for two years through September 2028 to all customers in the Mendon municipal aggregation program. In comparison, National Grid’s Basic Service rates are increasing from approximately 15 cents to 17 cents per kWh for residential customers; and from 14.5 cents to 15.5 cents for commercial customers, with those rates in place through Jan. 31, 2027.

The Mendon Community Choice Power Supply Program is a municipal aggregation program that allows the town to combine the purchasing power of residents and businesses to lower the cost of electricity. The town launched the program with Direct Energy Services two years ago to provide stable and affordable energy to residents that incorporates additional renewable energy.

Mendon’s roughly 1,500 customers saved $129 in electricity costs over that two-year period and increased their use of renewable energy by 10%, according to a June 2026 report from Colonial Power Group, which manages the program for the town.

While Direct Energy supplies the electricity, National Grid delivers it and customers receive their monthly electric bill from National Grid.

There are three tiers of service:

• The default standard service uses 10% more renewable energy than the minimum the state requires. That rate is increasing from $0.14450 to $0.16410 per kWh.
• The optional basic service meets the state’s renewable energy requirements and is increasing from $0.14020 to $0.16030 per kWh.
• The optional renewable service provides 25% above the state minimum renewable energy requirement. That rate is increasing from $0.15080 to $0.16990 per kWh.

Mendon residents are automatically enrolled in the program unless they opt out online or call Colonial Power Group at 866-968-8065. People can choose to opt out of the program at any time. Those who use a third-party energy supplier will stay in their selected program unless they choose to opt in online or call 866-485-5858, ext. 1 to join the program. The town advises verifying that your current supplier doesn’t charge a penalty for leaving their service.
