You might be surprised by the power of volunteers in Mendon. Major decisions, millions of dollars spent, proposals that affect the vision, character, quality of life and property values in Mendon are often volunteer driven. You could be a critical part of this process, since there are several committee, commission and board openings currently available.
The projects created by the various town committees often end with the final decision being made at a town meeting. The beauty of this democratic system is that every voter in Mendon has a voice to decide Mendon’s future. New England is one of the last places to hold on to this colonial tradition of decision-making which dates back to the 1600s.
Some find it an inefficient and annoying process since decisions are made through discussion and debate with sometimes hundreds of people. However, it also allows any resident to initiate new programs or important changes often with the seed of the idea starting on a town committee. Usually, the wisdom of the independent critical thinking of the group makes a balanced and thoughtful final decision.
If you are a Mendon resident you can apply for an array of openings including the Agricultural Commission, Finance Committee, Historic Commission, Community Preservation Committee, Zoning Board of Appeals, Town Forest Committee and more. See the full list of vacancies and emails at vacancies.
It’s easy to apply; email the Select Board office or write them at 20 Main Street, Mendon, MA 01756. Also, send an email to the committee of your interest. Include why you are interested, what skills you might bring to the committee, and your contact information. Experience is helpful, but not necessary. Many of the positions are “learn on the job.” All meetings are open to the public, so you can attend the meetings in person or remotely to learn more about might be involved in serving. The commitment is as much time as you want to put into it.
There are also positions where there might be an incumbent who might fill the role, but if you have an interest in the committee, you should still send an email/letter to the committee and Mendon Select Board so that if a vacancy pops up, your willingness to serve will be known. For a list of these positions contact the Town Clerk townclerk@mendonma.gov, 508-473-1085.
Throw your hat in the ring while there are still positions open! You can make a positive difference.
